What is Obesity?
Obesity is defined as 'the term used to describe someone who is very overweight with a high degree of body fat' (Health direct, 2016).
It is the sixth most common risk factor contributing to disease world wide with over 2 billion adults (40% of global population) being classified as overweight and 14% classified as obese. (WHO, 2016)
The World Health Organization (WHO) uses the Body Mass Index (BMI) (Figure 1 and Figure 2) Chart to calculate a persons body mass using their height and weight. This calculation then places you into a one of 4 categories (Underweight, Normal, Overweight, Obese).
To calculate BMI the formula weight (kg) / (height(m) x height(m))
An example is an individual is 172cm tall and weight 70kg
70/(1.72 x 1.72) = 23.66 ~ 24 (Normal weight range)
